Chinmoyi PatelI would like to work with a more metaphorical (and emotional) reading of a corner - the situation of being put in a corner, what it feels like and what possibilities it could open up. When a person feels cornered, either due to external circumstances or due to his/her own doing, the first reaction is to become defensive, angry or frustrated. It becomes a
‘negative’ situation with very limited options. However, I would like to explore what can come out of a predicament like that; how it could become a space to consider something previously unimagined, which can perhaps be liberating and take you well beyond the confines of a corner. The work will be a written piece – either as an email, something diaristic, or perhaps as the script of a play? – which will interweave fact and fiction. It will draw parallels and connections between an experience from my childhood, my grandfather’s role in the Emergency in India in 1975 for which he was imprisoned due to a dear friend’s betrayal and how it affected his relationship with my grandmother, and Tom McCarthy’s Remainder. Each of these situations/stories illustrates a different reaction to being put in a corner. I would like to reflect on the points of intersection and examine how they have come to play an important role in my life. |
